जुन्या काळात [[युरोप|युरोपातुन]] बोटीच्या मार्गाने अमेरिकेत स्थलांतर करण्यार्‍या लोकांना अमेरिकेचे पहिले दर्शन स्वातंत्र्यदेवतेच्या पुतळ्याद्वारे होत असे. आजही हा पुतळा अमेरिकेतील सर्वात महत्त्वाच्या खुणांपैकी एक मानला जातो.

'''स्वातंत्र्यदेवतेचा पुतळा''' किंवा ''स्टॅच्यू ऑफ लिबर्टी''हे जगातील सगळ्यात जास्ती फोटो काढला जाणारे ठिकाण अशी याची एका ओळीची ओळख आहे !!! रोज लाखो पर्यटक 'स्वातंत्र्यदेवतेचा पुतळा' चे कोट्यावधी फोटो कडून आपापल्या देशात परत जातात. १८८६ साली फ्रांसच्या लोक्कांनी अमेरिकेला दिलेली ही छोटीशी भेट आहे. १५१ फुट उंच असलेल्या या बाईच्या पुतळ्याच्या उजव्या हातात ज्योत असून डाव्या हातात पुस्तक आहे. त्यावर ४ जुलै १७७६ ही अमेरिकेच्या स्वातंत्र्यदिनाची तारीख लिहिलेली आहे "July IV MDCCLXXVI". पाया धरून याची उंची ३०५ फुट असून तिच्या मुकुटात ७ खिडक्या आहेत. ते जगातील ७ खंड दर्शवतात. उजव्या हातातील ज्योत प्रकाश दर्शवते तर डाव्या हातातील पुस्तक ज्ञान दर्शवते. १८७० मध्ये जुलेस जोसेफ लेफेब्व्रे चे painting 'ला वेरेत' च्या चित्राशी 'स्वातंत्र्यदेवतेचा पुतळा' मिळतेजुळते आहे. २.४ mm च्या तांब्याच्या पत्र्यापासून हा संपूर्ण पुतळा बनवलेला असून आतून त्याला लोखंडाच्या/ स्टीलच्या पट्ट्यांचा आधार दिला आहे. आताचा हिरवा रंग हा तांब्यावर हवेचा परिणाम झाल्यामुळे बनलेला आहे. हे होण्यासाठी १२ वर्षे जावी लागली. १९८६ साली नवीन ज्योत बदलण्यात आली. ९/११ च्या हल्यानंतर जुलै २००९ पर्यंत हा पुतळा आतून पाहायला बंदी होती. त्यामुळे मला मुकुटापर्यंत जाता आले नाही.
