१७७७ मध्ये नाना फडणीस यांनी कलकत्ता कौन्सिल बरोबर केलेला कराराचा भंग करत फ्रेंचाना पश्चिम किनारपट्टी वर बंदर उभारायची परवानगी दिली. ब्रिटीशांनी प्रत्युतरादाखल मुंबईवरुन सैन्य पाठवले. जानेवारी १७७९ मध्ये ३,९०० ब्रिटीश सैन्य कर्नल एगर्टन च्या नेतृत्वाखाली पुण्यावर चालून गेले. वाटेत रघुनाथरावांचे सैन्यही येउन मिळाले. मराठ्यांच्या सैन्य महादजी शिंदे व् तुकाजी होळकर यांच्या नेतृत्वाखाली होते. जानेवारी १७७९ मध्ये ३,९०० ब्रिटीश सैन्य कर्नल एगर्टन च्या नेतृत्वाखाली मुंबईवरुन पुण्याच्या दिशेने चाल करुन आले. वाटेत रघुनाथरावाचे काही हजार सैन्यही येउन मिळाले. मराठा सैन्याचे नेतृत्व महादजींकडे व तुकोजी होळकर यां कडे होते. ब्रिटीश सैन्याच्या वाटेत असंख्य अडथळे आणून त्यांचा चाल थंडावली व वाटेतीलत्यांनी सर्वतळेगाव रस्त्यामधीलयेथे गावातीलतळ कुरणे जाळली विहरीमहादजींनी January 1779, the forces of British troops consisting of about 3,900 men under command of Colटाकला. Theब्रिटीश Marathaसैन्याचे armyअन्नपाण्याहून wasहाल commandedहोउ by Mahadji Shinde and Tukojirao Holkarलागले. Mahadjiब्रिटीशांनी slowedमाघार downघेण्याचे theठरवले British१२ marchजानेवारी by१७७९ firingरोजी fromमध्य aboveरात्री aमराठ्यांनी hillब्रिटीशांवर andआक्रमण sentकेले forcesव underसर्व Jiwbadadaबाबतीत Bakshiचित andकरुन Lakhbajiवडगाव toयेथे cutशेवटी offब्रिटीश itsसैन्य supplyमहादजींना linesशरण by burning food and fodderआले. Whenthey found out about this, the British halted at Talegaon near Pune. The Maratha cavalry harassed the British from all sides and applying a scorched earth policy, burnt farmland and poisoned wells. The British began to withdraw frव्om Talegaon in the middle of the night, but the Marathas attacked, forcing them to halt at Wadgaon, where the British force was surrounded on 12 January 1779.
१६ जानेवारी रोजी वडगावचा तह झाला. इस्ट इंडिया कंपनीने १७७३ पासून मिळवलेला सर्व प्रांत परत करण्यात यावा असे ठरले. यात साष्टी, ठाणे व जवळपास सर्व गुजराथ पुन्हा मराठ्यांच्या ताब्यात आला. महादजीने ब्रिटीशांना युद्दाचा खर्च म्हणून ४१,००० रुपये देखील वसूल केले. रघुनाथरावाला मराठ्यांच्या हाती देण्यात यावे असे ठरले त्यानुसार १८ जानेवारी १७७९ रोजी रघुनाथराव व त्याचा सैन्याला पकडण्यात आले. तसेच महादजीने सखाराम बापूचा पराभव करुन त्याला सिंहगडाच्या तुरुंगात रवानगी केली
On 16 January, the British signed the Treaty of Wadgaon that forced the Bombay government to relinquish all territories acquired by East India Company in western India since 1773 which included Sashti (Salsette), Thane, and the entire Gujarat region. The British were also made to pay Rs. 41,000 as an indemnity to the army of Mahadji.
It was agreed that Raghunathrao would be handed to the Marathas. On [[18 January]] [[1779]] Mahadji captured Raghunathrao and his forces. He also defeated and arrested Sakharam Bapu and imprisoned him in the jail of Sinhagad.
