The idea for the project was created by Paulo Magalhães, who started the site on July 14, 2005. The motivation was based on the fact that he liked to receive mail, especially postcards.[11] “The element of surprise of receiving postcards from different places in the world (many of which you’d probably never have heard of) can turn your mailbox into a box of surprises – and who wouldn’t like that?”[12]
ह्या साईटची मूळ संकल्पना ही पाउलो Magalhães ची आहे, ज्याने हि साईट १४ जुलै २ ० ० ५ मध्ये सुरु केली. ह्या मागची प्रेरणा अशी होती कि स्वतः पाउलो ला पत्र प्राप्त करायला खूप आवडायचे विशेषतः पोस्टकार्ड." जगातील वेगवेगळ्या जागाहून जर तुम्हाला पोस्टकार्ड मिळत असतील आणि त्यामुळे तुमची पत्र पेटी एक आश्चर्यकारक पेटीत बदलून जात असेल तर ते कुणाला आवडणार नाही ?"
खरतर हा प्रकल्प पाउलो च्या छंदातून सुरु झाला. दिवसेंदिवस हा प्रकल्प लोकप्रिय होताना दिसत होता. पाउलो ने हा प्रकल्प घरात एका जुन्या संगणकावर सुरु केला नंतर लोकांची मागणी बघता त्याने हा प्रकल्प घरातील छोट्या संगणकावरून हलवून पोर्तुगाल मधील एका सीमावर्ती भागात वाढवल आणि मोठा केला.
The project started initially as a hobby for Magalhães, but its unexpected success revealed that the idea was more popular than he ever predicted. He initially hosted the project on an old computer housed in a clothes closet at his home; this setup quickly was shown to be insufficient. Based on word of mouth, the project quickly expanded over the Portuguese borders where the project was developed.
Over time the project received attention from the media which contributed to its growth and popularity. Postcrossing reached its first million exchanged postcards on April 11, 2008 and has since grown even more rapidly.[13] It reached the second million on February 26, 2009, with a postcard that traveled from Germany to Norway.[14] The third million was reached on September 24, 2009 with a postcard traveling from Finland to Slovenia.[15] The fourth million was reached on March 28, 2010 with a postcard traveling from the Czech Republic to the Netherlands.[16]
Postcrossing.com celebrated its five-year anniversary on July 14, 2010 with a photography contest for its members.[17] Shortly after celebrating their fifth birthday, Postcrossing.com reached 5,000,000 postcards received on August 24, 2010 with a postcard traveling from Isle of Man (registered under an Italian member) to Thailand.[18] The 7,000,000th postcard was sent on April 4, 2011 from China and received on April 19, 2011 in the Netherlands.[19] The 10,000,000th postcard travelled from Japan to Germany and was registered on January 27, 2012;[20] the 15,000,000th postcard travelled from Germany to Italy and was registered on December 31, 2012.[21] At the moment, 1,000,000 postcards are registered in about 2 months.

३rd million ची देवाणघेवाण सेप्टेम्बर २४ २००९ मध्ये नोंदवली गेली जे फिनलंडहून सोल्वेनिया ला पाठवलं गेल.
४th million ची देवाणघेवाण मार्च २८ २०१० मध्ये नोंदवली गेली जे चेक गणराज्यातून नेदरलंडला पाठवलं गेल.
जुलै २ ० १ ० ला पोस्टक्रोसिंग ने आपली पाच वर्ष पूर्ण केली त्या निमित्ताने पोस्टक्रोसिंग ने सदस्यांसाठी फोटोग्राफ चे एक छान कॉन्तेस्ट ठेवला होता. थोड्याच दिवसांनी प्रकल्पांने आपला ५ ० ० ० ० ० ० कार्ड्स चा टप्पा ओलांडला. २ ० १ १ मध्ये साईट ने ७ ० ० ० ० ० ० कार्ड्स चा पल्ला पार केला.
सध्या साईट वर १ ० ० ० ० ० ० कार्ड्स ची नोंदणी गेल्या दोन महिन्यात झालीये.
