Die scheinbare Bewegung eines nahen Sternes ist eine kleine Ellipse am Himmel in Bezug auf die Hintergrundsterne über den Zeitraum eines Jahres. Der Blickpunkt ist die Erde.

Der Winkel, der den Hauptaxenradius der Ekliptik darstellt, ist der Parallaxenwinkel.

Eine Bogensekunde (parsec) ist definiert als die Entfernung zu einem Objekt, dessen Parallaxenwinkel = 1 arcsec.
